As we covered earlier MLB has suspended a number of players for 50 games and Alex Rodriguez through 2014. These suspensions will impact the playoff hunt, in which the Cleveland Indians are currently involved, in many facets. We will look at how these suspensions impact the following, click on the team name to skip to that article:
New York Yankees
The Yankees lost Alex Rodriguez and Francisco Cervelli to suspensions. Rodriguez is returning from his season long injuries tonight for the Yankees even though he was hit with a 211 game suspension. Cervelli has only played in 17 games this year and is currently on the DL. Neither of these players have had a significant impact on the teams season so far but Rodriguez was expected to bring some power from the right side of the plate for the Yankees stretch run. Cervelli hasn’t played since April and was not likely to return this season.
The Yankees sit 9.5 games behind in the AL East and 4.5 games behind the Indians for the second Wild Card. The Yankees have 16 series left with 8 series against teams over .500. The play a 3 game series at the end of this week against the Tigers, who lost starting shortstop Jhonny Peralta to suspension, which benefits the team greatly. While they face quality opponents if they are able to pull it together they have 7 series against Tampa Bay, Baltimore and Boston where they could make up ground quickly.
The Indians and Yankees do not play again this season. The Yankees most likely playoff run will be towards the AL East based on their number of games against AL East opponents. The 2 Yankee suspensions have less impact on the Indians and their push towards the Wild Card based on scheduling.
