The Browns, like all other teams, cut down their roster to 53 men Saturday. In order to do so some surprise cuts were made that left the team without a kicker on their roster. Brian Sanford, the DL traded to Seattle for John Greco, was not moved via trade and instead was cut. Expect him to be picked up quickly by 4-3 defensive team. James Michael Johnson was a poor fit in the new 3-4 and was cut prior to his second season. This years 6th round pick Janoris Slaughter was a surprise cut. With his release the Browns now only have 4 players from this year’s draft class, but did keep 5 undrafted free agents. We covered the cutting of David Nelson, a big disappointment for the team and Nelson himself.

Look for the team to be busy over the next few days as obviously they will sign a kicker but they also have some needs at offensive guards, cornerback, running back and now wide receiver. As of now the Browns only have 4 receivers for the first week, with Josh Gordon being suspended for the first 2 games. With Norv Turner’s offense focusing on spreading the field more receivers seem to be needed, though TE Jordan Cameron can split out wide when needed.
