Reports are in that the Cleveland Cavaliers have signed DeSagana Diop to a deal to come to training camp. Diop was a former first round pick of the Cavs and is a large presence in the paint. Diop is now in his 12th year in the league and would be the 6th big man off the bench for the Cavs behind Andrew Bynum, Tristan Thompson, Anderson Varejao, Anthony Bennett and Tyler Zeller. He was drafted 8th overall by the Cavs in 2001.
Diop’s main skill is his size and defensive presence in the lane. He has never developed a solid offensive game but can set the occasional big man screen to open up a driver. The Cavs have some space on their roster and could carry Diop if he shows he is in shape. Diop played in only 22 games last year for the Charlotte Bobcats only averaging 10 minutes a game but pulling down over 2 rebounds during that time. While he is not a big splashy addition to the team, he is a big figure in the paint. 6 big man fouls can come in handy, especially when he can wear on a big man if needed in the post.
His return to the team should be interesting, how long he lasts will be another story.
