The Cleveland Cavaliers media day has come and gone and there are quite a few things to take away from what the players and coaches said about their potential in the 2013-14 season. Head coach, Mike Brown said “our team identity will be tough minded, physical, defensive first group that will feel it, breath it, touch it and see it from me and my staff on a daily basis.”

Bringing in head coach Mike Brown should improve the teams defensive statistics as the Cleveland Cavaliers were ranked 25th in points allowed with just over 101 a game and were ranked dead last in opponents field goal percentage with 47%. Getting better defensively will be crucial for the Cavaliers if they want to get into the playoffs, but Anderson Varejao said it best, “the most important thing is staying healthy. Every team got better and at the end of the day if you don’t stay healthy you’re not going to go anywhere.”

Injuries have been a problem for Varejao and when asked about possibly changing his style of play he responded by saying, “I’m not going to change, what happened to me in the past couple of seasons was bad luck. I’m going to keep working hard and doing what I have to do and playing the same way I  just  need to be more lucky. It could just be a coincidence as I’ve never gotten hurt in Europe, Brazil or my first six seasons in the NBA.”

Mid first round pick Sergey Karasev has been playing overseas and is ready to start playing basketball for the Cavaliers.
He is a guy who can shoot the ball from long distance and use either hand with the ball.
What Karasev wants to do for the Cavaliers is “put some new energy on the court” and he states, “I came here to help Cleveland get to playoffs.”

The Cavaliers second round pick, Carrick Felix out of Arizona State is one addition Mike Brown is excited about and after hearing what Felix can bring to the table there is no reason to believe he won’t thrive in Brown’s system.
When asked what Felix can bring to the Cavaliers he mentions, “defense, tough nosed, running the floor, knocking down open threes, making the easy plays and doing the dirty work.” All of those traits will be a great addition for Brown and the Cavaliers.
