John Clayton was on ESPN’s Mike and Mike in the Morning today. Clayton was going through all of the QB situations in the NFL with the Sam Bradford, Jay Cutler and Eagles quarterback injuries and other QBs not performing well. Clayton slipped in a note that the Browns may be looking to move on to Jason Campbell and could be looking at Vince Young soon. While the Browns looking for another quarterback is not a surprise, Young has not been mentioned often.
Young last played, this pre-season, for the Green Bay Packers. He was released at final cut down and has not been brought in by another team yet. Young, known for his wildly successful college career at Texas, has had a up and down professional profile. His rookie season he won rookie of the year after playing in 15 games throwing for over 2100 yards and rushing for another 552. Young combined for a total of 19 TDs and 13 INTs that year. Leading the Titans wins in 8 of the last 11 games and a 8-8 record.
Young has since had problems with Coach Jeff Fisher which led to his demotion and later his release from the team. Young went to the Eagles as a part of the “Dream Team,” actually coining the name even though he was the backup QB. Young played in 6 games that year completing 58% of his passes with 4 TDs and 9 INTs. He has not thrown a regular season NFL pass since that year, 2011.
Young has a big arm and has been mobile for his career. His weaknesses have been leading receivers, timing routes, looking off his target and touch throws (sound familiar?). His arm and mobility fit for the current scheme the Browns want to run. Bringing him in may also help the coaching staff prepare for the inevitable drafting of a dual threat QB in the 2014 1st round of the NFL Draft.
Other QBs are available, including the ever present Tim Tebow, but Young could be a interesting get for a floundering team. Who do you want the Browns to sign?
