Reports: Cleveland Browns to Hire Mike Pettine Today

We wake up this morning to the news that the Cleveland Browns may have made a decision related to their head coaching position. Will Burge reported this morning that, as long as the contract negotiations go well, Mike Pettine will be hired as the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

So Pettine will be in Cleveland, for some reason on a commercial flight, around noon and should have things wrapped up early in the afternoon. Most likely his agent and the Browns negotiators have started to lay out parameters of a contract already. Unless the Browns or Pettine have certain unique clauses they require it seems that this should go well.

Yet could the Browns insist on control over Pettine’s coaching staff? Could they insist on things they didn’t like about Rob Chudzinski to be included in the contract? Could Pettine attempt to insure himself at least a second, and maybe a 3rd year, with specific off-set or guaranteed language? Could this still get very “Browns-ed” up today? Two recent tweets that could cause issues today:

Confirmed: #Browns and #Patriots OC Josh McDaniels had more conversations this week. Possibly back in mix. (via @TonyGrossi )

#Browns do not have an agreement with Pettine; they have an out if talks today don’t go well. The “decision” is him accepting an offer

What do you think of Pettine as the next head coach? Will you celebrate this hire of a tough nosed coach or do you want another offensive coach? As we creep ever closer to a hire did the process go well? And what about Josh McDaniels?
