ESPN is reporting that the Cleveland Browns will hire Kyle Shanahan as the new Offensive Coordinator. Shanahan was let go, along with his father Mike, from the Washington Redskins. Shanahan was responsible for the creative and ground breaking offense put in for Robert Griffen III during his rookie season. During that season Shanahan also led a Kirk Cousins’ quarterbacked offense, Cousins’ rookie season as well, to a 38-21 defeat of the Browns. Cousins threw for 329 yards and 2 TDs with 1 INT while also rushing for 22 yards on 3 carries.
Prior to his time with the Redskins, Shanahan was the offensive coordinator with the Houston Texans for 2 years until reuniting with his father in Washington. Below is a chart of Shanahan’s offenses’ rankings over the past few years. For perspective the Browns were 27th in scoring, 18th in yards per game, 11th in passing yards per game and 27th in rushing yards per game in 2013
|Team||Scoring||Total Yards||Passing Yards||Rushing Yards|
|Washington Redskins – 2013||23||9||16||5|
|Washington Redskins – 2012||4||5||20||1|
|Houston Texans – 2011||10||13||18||2|
|Houston Texans – 2010||9||3||4||7|
So the Browns may be getting a coordinator that led a Top 10 level offense in his 4 years as coordinator. Yet his lowest ranking is obviously in passing yards with the 4th ranked team in 2010 being far outside the mean. His scoring offense in 2013, at 23rd, is also a concern. Shanahan is a proponent of the zone blocking style scheme yet with the offensive staff already hired by the Browns there may be some adjustments needed. Obviously this style of running has led to some top shelf rushing totals.
When/if Shanahan is officially hired FoS will take a look at a number of ways this impacts the Cleveland Browns for the 2014 season: Impact on free agents, the draft, current players and their QB position specifically. Some Browns fans called for his hire as head coach before the 2013 season, now the Browns get him to run their offense while Coach Pettine directs the team.
If this becomes official what do you think of Shanahan as the OC? Does last year in Washington worry you? Do you think he was carried by his father and his last name? Or do you think the rankings above show a sign of a solid offensive play caller?
