Hypothetical Welcome to Cleveland Browns: Jon Martin

This is a hypothetical letter to Jonathan Martin following a proposed trade from the Miami Dolphins to the Cleveland Browns for a 6th round pick. It is written from a insider the team point of view.

Mr. Martin,

Welcome to the Cleveland Browns. We acquired you to shore up the right side of our offensive line. We understand that you had a rough time in your previous place of employment but we plan to make this your home for the foreseeable future. Your talent is obvious as your second round selection in the NFL Draft shows. We hope that your versatility will fill either the right tackle or right guard position. With your addition and our offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan we plan to make good use of the Zone Blocking Scheme to enhance our running game. Your athleticism will also be useful in pass protection, giving our quarterback time to get ball to Pro Bowlers Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron.

As for the locker room issues you encountered in Miami, those won’t happen here. When you arrive your locker will be positioned between Joe Thomas and newly resigned Alex Mack. The two of them are veterans on our team and lad our offensive line. If you have any issues you report to them immediately. You will also report these issues to your positions coach in a timely manner. Our goal is that your time with the Browns is one where the story is the team’s play on the field. We will not let anything from off the field get in the way of that. We will also not allow your personal and professional development to be further stunted. Here with the Browns you will be given every opportunity to be the best person and player that you can be.

We look forward to you joining our team as we return this great franchise to its foundation of success.

Sincerely,

Browns Management

P.S. Go Browns

Obviously hypothetical and obviously teams won’t be writing any letters or emails. Yet would trading for Martin for a 6th round pick make it a possible win? Would a team be willing to give up that much? Would a team have to put protections like Mack and Thomas around Martin? Would his talent be more obvious when he is more comfortable? What are your thoughts?
