The 2014 NFL Draft is a few months away still but with the NFL Combine in full swing the Draft conversations will continue, with only a small break for free agency. For the Cleveland Browns this draft is huge for a number reasons. The team has cleared house from CEO on down through the coaches. The team has years of frustrating season of 4, 5 and 6 wins with little hope of sniffing the playoffs. Yet they have 10 picks, including 3 in the top 35, in a draft many are calling the deepest in years. As much as half, and maybe the whole, second round will be full of first round talent, at least compared to previous drafts. With that in mind the Browns have many decisions to make, even their fans are caught in the binds of the many options the team has.

With that we present This or That #1 for the Cleveland Browns draft. We will present 2 reasonable options for the Browns 2014 draft and you the fans will debate and decide on This or That as the best choice for the Browns. Today we will look at the first 2 rounds of the draft and specifically the QB position. For This or That #1 we will assume the Browns will select a QB with one of their first 3 picks.

This Option

With the #4 pick the Browns select the best QB available to them. It is possible that only 1 is available and at best 2 will be available to select from. For the sake of this article who the Browns select is less important then that they pick a QB here.

#4 – Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater or Johnny Manziel

With the #26 pick after taking a QB the Browns have a myriad of options but based on the depth of the WR class the Browns decide to improve their defense which has 2 or 3 holes left in it. The Browns could look at a top flight corner, a inside linebacker like CJ Mosley or this writer’s favorite choice Ryan Shazier or look for a free safety. To make it easier to make a decision we give the Browns Mosley to put next to and replace down the road D’Qwell Jackson.

#26 – CJ Mosley

With the 35th pick the Browns return to the offensive side of the ball and look to pick up a wide receiver to compliment Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron or a running back to solidify the offense. With options left, as WRs fall due to the class depth, the Browns are looking pretty. A few of O’Dell Beckham, Travis Benjamin, Allen Robinson, Jarvis Landry, Brandin Cooks, Davante Adams, Jordan Matthews among others should still be available here. Yet Carlos Hyde is still on the board and local Buckeyes fans rejoice as they get a Buckeye on their favorite pro team.

#35 – Carlos Hyde

I’m not a big fan of A J McCarron and 2nd round is a little too high to take him. I do like taking Watkins at #4 and the lineman at #26. I think if you want to draft a QB later take McCarronin the 3rd round and in round 7 take Connor Shaw from South Carolina!! He will surprise you, he is tough, plays hurt and is accurate and a winner. He can also extend a play and scramble for yardage if necessary!!

    • Jared Mueller

I tend to agree with you but if AJ is their guy they won’t risk him slipping I don’t believe. Combine confirmed a lot of his positive qualities.

If necessary take him in the second round. I’m not sure who their guy is, but it’s someone in the later rounds or if all this is a smoke screen for one of the Big Three? But I’d really like to see Watkins continue to wear an orange helmet, but with brown instead of purple!!

        • Jared Mueller

I don’t see any WR worth a that pick. No Julio, AJ, Megatron type. I like Watkins. Would take him in a trade down.

Don’t think Watkins will be available in trade down! I was talking about their Guy at QB. Not sure if they are laying a smoke screen for one of the big three? Watkins is the best receiver in the draft since Julio Jones!! They blew getting him with the trade they made and I don’t see another WR in the next few years that can compare to him!! He’s got Travis Benjamin speed and can CATCH!!!

You missed option #3. Both. Something I’ll be touching on with SW tomorrow

I hope you know that Cyrus had the worst workout of any OL at the combine.

    • Jared Mueller

I had heard/seen that. Generally scouts focus on tape but there were some worries about him. Bad combine/pro day didn’t impact Andre Smith but could hurt Cyrus. I still love a big, strong athletic bulldozer on the right side. Will have to delve deeper into his workout numbers, ie was his bench press low due to long arms, etc. Thanks for the heads up Paul
