A 2014 NFL Mock Draft That Lands the Browns Watkins & Manziel

We reviewed a number of 2014 NFL Mock Drafts yesterday, including the Dual CBS Sports Mock Drafts and SI’s Two Round Mock Draft. Today we look at a 2014 NFL Mock Draft that seems to be the dream scenario that makes all Browns fans happy. This Mock Draft is posted by a trusted analyst from the Twittersphere.

4. Cleveland Browns – Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
This is the expected landing spot for Johnny Manziel, and it’s certainly a place I could see him landing. However, I’ve heard too many times that a legitimate fall is possible for Manziel on draft day. Until I hear completely otherwise, I’ll think the Browns look for an impact player at the 4th overall pick. Watkins and Josh Gordon will make any quarterback successful.

Drafting Watkins would make many fans happy who watched the electric wide receiver light up the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Orange Bowl. Watkins had a great Combine proving his athletic talent that shows up on tape. Watkins paired with Gordon would be huge for the Browns. Not taking a QB #4 shows confidence in Brian Hoyer or a second tier QB in this draft, and the coaching staff’s ability to coach them up.

26. Cleveland Browns – Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
Manziel could go a lot higher, and most reports are that he won’t leave the top-10. The Browns at 4th overall are the most obvious fit, but if signs are that he’ll fall on draft day, they’d be wise to consider waiting on Manziel to the mid to late first round. The Browns need a franchise quarterback, and Manziel, with time, can fill that void.

This mock has Manziel falling all the way to the Browns at 26. Its possible that the Browns would look to move up in the draft if they see a QB start to fall. After the Browns at #4, the Raiders, Bucs and Vikings are possible landing spots for QBs. This mock has Derek Carr going to the Vikings, which fits their need for a big armed QB. The Titans at #11, the Cardinals at #20 and the Chiefs at #23 could also look to add a QB to develop behind their current starters. Carr is also a possibility to the Browns at #26 but doesn’t excite some Browns fans as much as Manziel.

The pairing of Manziel and Watkins would electrify the fan base and give the Browns an exciting offense. This writer thinks Hoyer should start for a year and let whatever QB is drafted sit, which could throw cold water on the fun the fans want with Manziel. Watkins being able to be a #2 receiver could quicken his development, rookie WRs normally develop slow. What do think of that pairing?

I like this scenario and would actually move up a few spots to see it happen, but no more than #26 and a third round choice. I like both Carr and Manziel and would take a shot at either one that was left in this line of thinking. I believe Watkins gives the Brown’s the best value at #4 !!!

I am obviously not a Watkins at 4 guy…. No WR really at that point unless they are Megatron… I think Evans and Lee could have a bigger impact. Watkins frame scares me.

I live 30 miles from Clemson and have seen Watkins play on numerous occasions, you would be surprised at what he can do!! He would have even better statistics if Boyd had been a better quarterback! Watkins was suspended 2 games, but I don’t think he missed more than 1 or 2 due to injury! He has a third and forth gear that will absolutely freak people!! But I feel about the quarterbacks in this draft like you do about Watkins. You put him up against Megatron and Julio Jones, I put these quarterbacks up against Luck and Manning and the like and none is close!!! Watkins is closer to Johnson and Jones !!!

  • Don Andrew Halvorson

    Right. Keep dreaming.

    • Jared Mueller

My only dream is all my Browns faithful are happy.

  • Todd Limpert

the Watkins pick is Great but news for you Jared their not taking Manziel at 26th Farmer is not not dumb enough to take a 3rd or 4th round pick in the first round. Regardles of how bad they need a QB the 2 stooges are gone

    • Jared Mueller

I’ve really only seen Jaws say he was that low. Not sure of him but Brenden Leister who does a good job of scouting really likes Manziel. First year in a long time that I think all 3 could either boom or bust.

      • Todd Limpert

I’ve heard others say it. Manziel was a great college player don’t get wrong. But he doesn’t have a strong enough arm to learn how to be a pocket passer like Drew Breeze and he will get crushed running around tiring to make plays like RG3. Goodluck with the team that takes him.

        • Jarod Cook

I agree with you on all your points about Manziel is no better then 3rd round pick if he’s lucky. I know 1 of these teams is going to gamble in the first and grab him HOU, JAX, OKL, Vikes, just hope it’s not the Browns. I can see if he makes out of the 1st rd, Texens take him with #33 pick, that’s the absolute earliest he should come of the board IMO.

          • Todd Limpert

I agree with you Jarod if bridgewater or bortels are gone. I would take Clowney Watkins Mathews or Mack. We need a QB but we could get Garopplo at 26 or even 35

Here’s a link to a good mock draft I was shown.

I’m not sold with any these QBs at the top of the draft.

          • Todd Limpert

Im not eather but at least they have size arm strengh and i hope they could sit at least a year behind Hoyer before playing. And Hopeing we dont see the 4th pick for ten years

          • Jarod Cook

I like Watkins he’s like Gordon how he’s not just a deep speed threat. Most of the big plays Gordon/Watkins have are 5-10 cross or curl routes, that they make into 20+ yard plays. To me Carr and Teddy are the most NFL ready out of the bunch, but they can get Carr at #26/35 instead of spending #4 on a not sure thing QB.

          • Todd Limpert

i Have been blowing my trumpet for Watkins the whole time i cant even imagine he and Gordon on the same Field together. But i also know we need someone to get them the ball we really know nothing about Hoyer at this point and weather he can make it a hole season. im not sold on Carr after his bowl game. So i guess what im saying i would understand if they take Bridgewater or Bortels but i would rather have Watkins. i would take Garopplo over Carr at 35 we had our Manziel named Colt.

  • Jarod Cook

If Watkins was 2-3 inches taller I’d say go for him at #4, But in a WR rich draft I believe there well be talent in the 2/3/4 rds that can play WR2. With the release of DQJ and having a Defensive HC, I think the Browns might take Mack at #4. Or trade down to #8-12 and grab Mosely or Evens, and stock pile more picks. At #26 they take Carr(might be smoke and mirrors), cause that’s who they seem to like and transitions better to the NFL.

  • Gary

I like Watkins. Would be perfect fit with Gordon.
Don’t care for Manziel at all. How many qb’s in the past have been good in college, but failed in Pros. I see him failing.
