With NFL Free Agency beginning in 9 days rumors will start up quickly. You can look through our Browns section for our recent coverage. Today came word the the Green Bay Packers have failed to come together with cornerback Sam Shields on a new contract and Shields will test the free agent market. This could fill a need for the Cleveland Browns as Jason La Canfora notes:
With Packers having difficulty locking up CB Sam Shields prior to market opening, I'd expect the Browns to be among his chief suitors

Shields would be a huge pickup for the Browns to go across from Joe Haden. Last year the Browns were unwilling to bring in a high price free agent corner in worries that it would upset Haden and make extension negotiations with the star difficult. Shields is 26 years old and stands 5’11” and 184 lbs. He isn’t the big corner the team needs to guard the ever growing receivers in the league. He is a talented corner who excelled with the Packers. Last season he picked off 4 balls in 14 games. For his career he has 13 INTs and 45 passes defended.
The Browns have the ability to spend money in a variety of areas. With the depth on the offensive side in the draft it wouldn’t be a surprise for the Browns to spend money on the defensive side of the ball. If they do sign a big time corner expect them to have an extension in place with Haden near that time.
Do you think Shields, and the cornerback position, is a good way to spend money this off-season or should it be used elsewhere? Is Shields the corner you want or does someone else interest you? Could trading for Darrelle Revis be a better option?
