The Cleveland Cavaliers destroyed the Detroit Pistons last night. They moved the ball, moved without the ball, played defense and hit shot after shot. The downtrodden Pistons are not a team that winning against should be overly celebrated but many Cavs faithful have to ask the question: “Where was this team earlier in the year?” or even easier “Where was this team against the Hawks last week?”
Yet as the Cavs were destroying the Pistons eyes turned to the Atlanta Hawks and Boston Celtics game. Early in the game it looked like the Hawks would pull away and put the Cavs playoff hopes to rest quickly. Yet the plucky Celtics came back to make it a game and actually took sizeable leads in the second half. The Hawks looked like they would leave the Cavs hopes on life support for one more night. Then in the middle of the 4th quarter the Hawks flipped a switch and decided to win the game.
That win ended any hope the Cavs had of getting to the playoffs. The Hawks and Knicks are still fighting for the last spot but the Hawks have a 2 game advantage and the Knicks’ star Carmelo Anthony is dealing with injury. It looks like the Hawks will make the playoffs and try to give either the Indiana Pacers or Miami Heat a fight in the first round, doubtful but possible.
For the Cavaliers they currently sit in a virtual tie for the 8th worst record in the league. That is most likely the best odds they can receive in the upcoming NBA Draft Lottery. Winning 2 more games could put them in position for the 10th or 11th best Lottery odds. At this point the wins seem far more important then a couple extra percentage point odds of winning a higher lottery spot (Though I could regret that if another New Orleans situation happens).
What will be your best memory of this season? Your worst?
