One Player the Cavs Could Trade For: Boston Celtics

The Cleveland Cavaliers off-season won’t start for a little while but that doesn’t stop us from looking forward to what could happen. We will look at every team in the NBA, starting from the worst record to the best, and one player from each team that the Cavs could trade for. The player would have to be somewhat available, Kevin Durant is getting traded, a trade that would be approved by the NBA will be presented and the player would have to fit with the Cavaliers. This morning we are to the Utah Jazz. You can click on the team and player below to check out our previous posts.

So Far: Bucks – L. Sanders    76ers – T. Young     Magic – A. Afflalo     Jazz – E. Kanter

Player – Jeff Green

Jeff Green was rumored to be a target of the Cavaliers this past season. Green is an interesting all around player who will never be the star of a team but provides needed qualities all over the court. He is a more offensive minded Anderson Varejao. Green will be going into his 6th season. He started all 82 games this previous season, averaging almost 17 points to go along with over 4 rebounds from the small forward position. Green also averaged 34% from the 3 point line along with 41% from the field.

Fit With Cavaliers

The Cavs are in need of a all around type player at the 3 spot if they can’t bring in a superstar. With Dion Waiters and Kyrie Irving providing the offensive needs of the team and Tristan Thompson and Varejao providing interior defense, Green can provide the play Luol Deng was suppose to. He doesn’t need plays run for him but will still score. Defensively he doesn’t have the best foot quickness but does an adequate job against most of the league’s 3 men.

Why the Celtics Could Trade Him

The Jazz are in rebuilding mode with Rajon Rondo as the centerpiece. With a possible Top 5 pick in the upcoming draft the Celtics can clear playing time for their top pick. They have Brandon Bass, Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk in the frontcourt and Avery Bradley joining Rondo in the backcourt. That leaves the 3 spot to be filled. Green has 1 year left on his contract with a player option for another year. His almost $9.5 million contract can be spread out in other areas for the depth of the team.

Trade Proposal(s)

The Celtics could up the ante in the upcoming draft by adding another Top 10 pick for Green, or could gamble on a future pick from the Cavs and young shooting guard/small foward.

The Cavs trade Sergey Karasev and Cavs 2015 1st Round Pick (Top 3 Protected) for Green

The Celtics get a developmental player in Karasev as well as the Cavs pick in 2015 that could be high and continue to get the Celtics building for a future around Rondo and the rest of the young core. The Cavs get a player that can glue together the team and get them competitive in the East. His veteran presence would be huge for the young team.

What do you think about Green? Is Karasev someone you want to watch develop? Any worries about giving up the 2015 pick for a player who won’t carry a team?
