The charismatic New York Jets coach, Pettine, and Bill Belichik are swamped in the NFL equivalent of a tangled loved triangle.
The spat stems from comments he made to TheMMQB.com, where Pettine suggested Tom Brady bragged to then Jets outside linebackers coach Mike Smith at Wes Welker’s 2012 wedding that the Patriots may be in possession of some Jets’ defensive playbooks. Pettine also states Ryan gave the books to Alabama coach Nick Saban, who in-turn would’ve passed it along to Belichik.
“Don’t you know Saban and Bill are pretty good friends? I have a feeling it’s going to end up in New England.” Pettine said. “It didn’t shock me because Rex would give them out like candy anyway,” Pettine told TheMMQB.
That got Ryan fired up when he defended Belichick.
“I don’t know what he’s trying to gain, but that’s up to make,” Ryan said. “To discredit somebody, especially a guy like Belichick, who’s a real coach, studies his butt off and things, I think it’s ridiculous. There’s no merit to it. Whatsoever.”
Saban, through an Alabama spokesperson Thursday, said he never gave a copy of the Jets playbook to the Patriots, according to the New York Daily News.
Pettine was Jets’ defensive coordinator from 2009-2012. He hooked up with Ryan while the two worked with the Baltimore Ravens, and ascended up the coaching ranks under Ryan. Pettine was defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills before taking the Cleveland job.
All the rumors are drumming up old Spygate memories, as many wonder if Belichik has the playobooks.
No word on whether or not the tiff will be resolved on Maury. Stay tuned.
