At the end of the Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coaching search the team was down to choosing between David Blatt and Tyronn Lue. They ended up with both of them. In somewhat of a surprise Lue chose to join Blatt’s coaching staff as Assistant Head Coach today. Technically the move is a move up for Lue but he leaves the Los Angeles Clippers and Doc Rivers staff to join a 1st time NBA coach.
Lue is seen as an up and comer in NBA circles and will now join with Blatt in recreating the culture of the Cavaliers. How much credit Lue will get for any positive turnaround will be interesting. If the Cavs do well Blatt may get the credit and delay the ability for Lue to get a HC job. If the Cavs do lousy it is possible that Lue could take over the team in a few years (for the Cavs that also could mean sometime in the next season or two).
It is unknown what led Lue to leave LA (say that 5 times fast). Yet it is another win for the Cavaliers. Lue should give guidance to Kyrie Irving after years of working with point guards, including Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo. The Cavaliers, though a long and arduaous process have come out looking golden on the other side of this coaching search. A year after turning over no stones the Cavs turned over a ton and finally ended up with their 2 first picks on their staff. That is like landing both Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid in this draft, well we can dream can’t we?
What are your thoughts on Lue coming over? Surprised he left Doc in LA to come to Cleveland?
