NBA Free Agency officially opened last night. So far the only thing anyone knows for sure in the whole league is that Kyrie Irving is signing a 5 year contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers, we covered some reaction to that here. Other then that everything is rumor of contact, interest and planning visits. Yet the Cavs were linked to a number of rumors throughout the night:
Adding both Chandler Parsons and Marcin Gortat could be tough but would be an awesome off-season for the Cavaliers. Along with Andrew Wiggins, Parsons and Gortat would help address the 4 biggest weaknesses for the Cavaliers: Shooting, Athleticism, Inside Scoring and Rim Protection.
Losing C.J. Miles would hurt many Cleveland fans, including many writers, as Miles has been a great player to interact with. Miles looking for a bigger role is no surprise. He had hoped for that in Cleveland after leaving Utah but only saw it in spurts. He would fit really well into David Blatt’s system but could decide it is just time to move on.
Spencer Hawes being highly sought after this early in free agency may be a surprise but his unique skill set isn’t found elsewhere. The Cavs would love to keep him but the pursuit of Gortat could end that. Hawes shooting would be great for coach Blatt’s system but its likely he take a shot somewhere else, especially if he can finally return to the West Coast closer to where he grew up.
Ariza is an interesting player that the Cavs have pursued before. He has a history of making good on his contract years as he did last year with the Wizards. An LA kid its likely he will return to the Wizards or back to the Lakers. The Cavs have interest but would they have to overpay? Will their pursuit of Parsons and other FA take them out of the running?
We will do everything we can today, and the next week, at FoS to keep you up to date with all the rumors, news and signings connected to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
