Could Justin Masterson be traded before baseball’s trade deadline?
Considering the year Masty has had to this point, it seems unlikely, but that’s not going to stop any speculation regarding the free-agent to be.
MLB Trade Rumors wrote this about Masterson:
“Masterson has had a brutal year, thanks in part to a fastball that has dipped by 2.5 mph and a BB/9 rate that has spiked north of 5.00. Currently on the DL for a knee issue, he could possibly be acquired by a team that thinks resting his knee will return him to the form that made him one of the top projected free agents prior to this season. Of course, Cleveland may not be willing to sell low on its former ace.”
It’s hard to imagine the Tribe moving Masterson with the team in contention in the divisional, and Wild Card standings. Any trade would send the wrong message to a team that’s remained competitive, despite the poor play it’s received from players who were supped to be big contributors.
• Francisco Lindor was promoted to Class AAA Columbus, and played in his first game with the Clippers Tuesday night. Cleveland.com columnist Terry Pluto wrote this about the Tribe’s shortstop of the future:
“The 5-11, 190-pound Lindor is one of those young athletes who makes the game look ridiculously easy. He’s a switch-hitter with a smooth swing. He seems to glide in the field, and has a real sense of the best play to made even when the pace of the game is frenetic.”
• All indications are that the starting quarterback position is Brian Hoyer‘s to lose, but that hasn’t stopped coach Mike Pettine from setting a deadline to name a starter. After all, Hoyer and Johnny Manziel are supposed to be in a competition.
“The first-year head coach told reporters Monday that the Browns expect to name their starting quarterback by their third preseason game, which takes place Aug. 23 against the Rams.”
• This web site published a column arguing why Hoyer is the most important player on the Browns heading into the 2014 campaign.
• Ohio State fans will have to wait until Dec. 13 to see if Damien Harris, a five-star running back recruit, will commit to the Buckeyes, via Cleveland.com.
