Breaking: Shawn Marion Chooses the Cavs

The Cleveland Cavaliers have just added a huge piece to their roster with the reported decision by Shawn Marion. According to Marc Stein Marion has decided to come to the Cavs over the weeked:

This is huge news for the Cavs who have added high level talent in LeBron James and soon to be Kevin Love while also adding needed experience, depth and talent to the bench in James Jones, Mike Miller and Shawn Marion. The draw to join the Cavs was obviously a chance to play with James and compete for a championship:

The Cavs were in competition with the Indiana Pacers, and as of yesterday the Los Angeles Clippers, for Marion’s services. The Clippers, like the Cavs, were looking for depth in a championship level team, while the Pacers were looking for someone to replace Paul George who is likely out for the season.

Instead the Cavs get a backup forward who can guard at least 3 positions. He, along with James, will give the Cavs versatility defensively. He is also an adept three point shooter, even with his funky shooting form and messed up pinky finger. Last season for the Dallas Mavericks he averaged just over 10 points and 6.5 rebounds with 36% shooting from the 3 point line.

The Cavs will have a solid rotation of players coming off the bench. Matthew Dellavedova as a point guard, Miller at SG, Jones at SF and Tristan Thompson at the 4 spot. Bredan Haywood is the backup center.

The Cavs are also in the running for Ray Allen, the best 3 point shooter in history. Allen hasn’t made his decision yet but adding him could be a final piece. Finding another center who could compete with Haywood is the only other move the Cavs would likely be able to make.

With the addition of Marion and Allen the Cavs would have Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters, James, Love and Anderson Varejao starting with Delly, Miller, Jones, Thompson, Haywood, Marion, Allen, and rookie Joe Harris to get the team’s roster to 13. The players acquired from Utah could be moved in the Love deal or could stick at the end of the roster.

Either way the change over from last year’s young roster to this one is amazing. Once finished we will look at the changes more in depth.

How big of an impact will Marion have on the team?
