VoF: Ohio State Hoops, Browns Draft, and Indians Need Good Luck

facebooktwitterreddit

Let’s talk a little northeast Ohio sports! Browns draft, Buckeye basketball and our fledgling Tribe. Some quick questions and answers…

1. The NFL Draft is almost here and the excitement is building. Speculation concerning the Browns is all over the place. Which is how Ray Farmer probably likes it. Will the franchise go after Marcus Mariota or a safer pick, such as Danny Shelton. Maybe Farmer surprises us all and goes after Amari Cooper?

With two first-round choices, would the Browns be wise to double up on defense or on offense or split the picks?  They need help on both lines and receiver. Obviously, quarterbac is a glaring need. But is there that really good QB in this draft? Waiting until a later round and getting a lesser known name may be a better move.

I contend that if you can’t move up in the draft for a reasonable price, then don’t. Even Tampa Bay is wavering on which quarterback to choose. If Shelton is there at 12, I’d say take him. I’m offensive oriented in my philosophy, but Cleveland needs  a run stopper.

With that need filled, Farmer could look for the best reciever avaiable! Everyone keeps picking corners in the late rounds and we already have plenty. But we do need a kicker. We lost games last year because of it!

2. In the world of BasketBucks, have you been paying attention to the preseason polls and hoopla yet? I know it’s early, but the Buckeyes are mostly predicted to be in the lower middle of the Big Ten, and pundits aren’t picking them for next year’s NCAA Tournament.

In fact, the closest the Buckeyes are getting to the tourney are in predictions for the out lists! But Ohio State is very young and leadership we’d like to see from players who just completed their sophomore and junior seasons just isn’t there.

Thad Matta has a decent class coming in and all we can really do is pray the freshman overachieve, like D’Angelo Russell did this past season. Nobody thought the kid was going to be THAT good.

3. As for the Indians, the Sports Illustrated curse has begun! That, or the Tribe is ridiculously unlucky. We had a glut of pitchers early in the spring and now they are dropping faster than pins at a PBA event! Gavin Floyd was first, and then Josh Tomlin.

Now Carlos Carasco gets hit with a line drive and Zach McAlister looks destined for a career in the bullpen.

Nick Swisher hasn’t made an appearance yet and the big bat they brought in, Brandon Moss, is batting south of the Mendoza line for an average!

Cleveland fell behind last year and couldn’t make up the ground fast enough. That’s happening again and they were trying to avoid it.

Terry Francona has to play the cards he was given. That includes a hurt Michael Brantley (back) and Yan Gomes. The Indians  need a few good things to happen, and the sooner the better!

This should be a very interesting month to six weeks. Let’s see what happens when the dust clears.

What do you think? Will Manziel come back and right the ship? Will the Browns go D or O or both? Can the Trbe pull it together?
