In all my years of watching and covering the Cleveland Browns, the New York Jets loss made it seem like the end was near–after only one game! How fast things can change! The Browns were a different team from start to finish. Mike Pettine had his group prepared, and his team played angry all game long.

What was the biggest change?

Johnny Manziel.  It wasn’t an unforgettable performance by the first-year pro, but he brought an entirely different dimension to an offense that  hasn’t been seen in Cleveland since Jeff Garcia in 2004. I know, I know. Charlie Frye, Colt McCoy, and even Brian Hoyer at times would scramble and make plays on the run, but they weren’t as exciting as the flashes we saw from Manziel. The touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin on the last possession brought back memories of Fran Tarkenton throwing to Robert Miller against the Dallas Cowboys–graciously extending the play, while getting chased down by four defenders and still completing the pass.

I’m  not anointing him as the next Tarkenton, but it should giveBrowns fans a sense of relief knowing Johnny could potentially be the franchise’s answer at quarterback, and that he still has a play-making dynamic in his game.  There’s still light at end of Manziel’s tunnel, and with a few more offensive weapons and consistency, he could reach his potential.

There’s no need to be mega elated, over the Browns’ performance, but the possibilities are endless. The defense played much better and brought toughness with every play. They started to bend and break some in the fourth quarter, but when the offense was stymied, they never had a chance to rest. John Hughes and Armonty Bryant are players who came up HUGE! They were constantly around the ball, and were making Marcus Mariota‘s life a nightmare on every possession.

However, with the good–always comes the bad. While the Browns won the game in considerable fashion, the team still had its struggles and still has a long way to go.

These are some of the player’s that have to get it together for the next game:
