Cleveland Browns: Could Josh McCown Be Dealt To Dallas?
By Ryan Rosko
Is veteran quarterback Josh McCown‘s time really coming to an end with the Cleveland Browns? It very much could be.
The Dallas Cowboys are in the market for a backup quarterback ever since Kellen Moore broke his ankle. As Dallas has process through the names of possible options, one player who is indeed an option is Josh McCown.
McCown now has no shot at starting again heading into the regular season, but he has experienced a lot in the NFL. There has not been any reported discussions of a trade between the two teams, but at this time, McCown would be the only trade target.
Given the other options via free agency, it makes plenty of sense why McCown would be considered. There is imply not enough supply of quality, at least serviceable quarterbacks to meet the demand.

Yes, Dallas needs a backup ASAP, but it is tough to imagine the Cleveland Browns giving up McCown regardless of the trade compensation. We all know it will not be high, but if Dallas desperately wants to acquire him, maybe, just maybe Dallas owner Jerry Jones offers something of better value.
A reaction like that would be beneficial for the Cleveland Browns, but at the same time this is not a football game in the Madden series. It would be great to see such an offer, but we have to think in reality.
Besides, even if Dallas were to offer Cleveland something a bit higher than the going compensation pick for example, why would the Browns even consider the offer? Any consideration does not make sense.

Should Dallas actually offer the Cleveland Browns a deal for McCown, Cleveland needs to reject it quickly. Potentially moving on from McCown shows that the organization is completely trusting Robert Griffin III under center.
I, along with many fans and the organization are confident in him, but Griffin is not guaranteed to provide any quarterback stability yet. Once he shows that on a regular basis, then maybe that could be a different story.
Having McCown part of the Browns roster gives them a safety net in case Griffin does struggle. Besides, if the Cleveland Browns were to deal away McCown, that leaves rookie quarterback Cody Kessler and Austin Davis as the backup options.
Does Browns head coach Hue Jackson and the team’s front office really want to put their young team in a position without a reliable backup veteran quarterback? I do not see that happening. Yes, Davis is veteran too, but he has not played as much as one expect.
There is not a good reason for the speculation of a Cleveland Browns trade involving McCown to turn into reality. Obviously if a deal gets close to being completed, then that means Jackson is impressed by Kessler’s and Davis’ progression.
There is a chance for a deal to be completed, but with Dallas’ preference of free agent quarterback Nick Foles, do not expect McCown to leave Cleveland. That said, if Dallas is really interested in a Browns quarterback, why not trade for Davis instead? He has NFL experience and is much younger.

Cleveland is not going to have four quarterbacks come the regular season. How they get to three is the mystery.
