Cleveland Browns: Don’t Dismiss Anything During The 2017 NFL Draft

Changes will be made with the Cleveland Browns’ roster prior to the 2017 NFL Draft, but that should not dismiss anything when on the clock.

Like every offseason, there will be a number of players who will either not be re-signed or released. At the same time, free signings will be made. For the Cleveland Browns‘ sake, hopefully a number of impactful acquisitions are made, something that has not always been the case.

The Browns will do what they believe are the best moves for the franchise. Not every decision will work out, but the organization knows they need talent all across the board.

Unless something drastically changes, Cleveland is going to go defense with the first pick of the draft. Still, there will be a number of players who could be intriguing to Cleveland on both sides of the ball. Some of those players could end up Cleveland, but that is far from a guarantee.

Let’s look at a few hypothetical situations. Cleveland does nothing with their quarterback situation by April. They could go quarterback with one of their first few picks.

Instead, the Browns go best player available in round one and with their first second round pick, 33rd overall, along with another pick either in 2017 or in 2018 gets dealt to the New England Patriots for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Cleveland gets more talent and possibly the top quarterback available either via trade or free agency. The catch however, is that no trade would occur until after Cleveland made at least the top pick in the draft.

Such a move is very tempting. On the other hand, what if Cleveland were to trade up into the top 10? In this scenario, the Browns already drafted Texas A&M EDGE Myles Garrett, but they still have holes on defense, specifically in the secondary.

So, Cleveland trades up into the top six, maybe seven and continues to add to their defense. By this time of the draft, no quarterback would be worth drafting as the top ones are off the board. Of course, Cleveland would have to give up multiple picks to do so, starting with the 12th overall selection.

Making such a move should put them into position would allow Cleveland to draft LSU safety Jamal Adams. Don’t forget an Ohio State defensive back like Marshon Lattimore too. That said, don’t expect the latter as much because Cleveland does not often draft Buckeyes.

These are just a couple of the many situations Cleveland could find themselves in. I would be more surprised if the Browns don’t move at least one of their first five picks.

If we have learned one thing from the Browns’ current regime, it is that they are not shy to make trades. When it comes to their draft picks and the way they use them, expect a wild, yet exciting ride as they add various types of talent.
