Dan Gilbert already owns the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Cleveland Browns looks like they will be his next investment.

Unconfirmed reports out of Cleveland are reporting that yet another ownership change will happen with the Cleveland Browns. To some surprise, the next owner will be one that many Cleveland fans have hoped for: Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. What Gilbert will pay is unknown at this time.

Gilbert is the founder of Detroit, Michigan based Quicken Loans Inc., and is also known for investing in the Detroit and Cleveland, Ohio areas. To improve their relationship even more, the new owner plans on bringing over forward LeBron James as EVP of football operations Sashi Brown’s boss. James’ role will be president of football operations.

Including James makes sense. After all, he did play in high school and was a beast during his career.

James’ representatives also mentioned how despite this being a unique route to go on, the Los Angeles Clippers are also considering doing something similar. Los Angeles Chargers tight end Antonio Gates is rumored to be of interest to join their organization. Gates played college basketball in NE Ohio at Kent State.

One additional way for James to become a billionaire athlete is by branching out to other sports and where better to make that happen than in Cleveland? Well, for James, it may be with the Dallas Cowboys as he is a fan of theirs, but you can’t beat continuing to work in your hometown area.

As NFL ownership meetings progressed, the possibility of this happening was oddly not mentioned. Up until now, a change in ownership, which would be official later this year, has been strictly a pipe dream.

Gilbert is known for big splashes from bringing back James and trading for power forward Kevin Love. Who knows what Gilbert may have up his sleeve with this purchase.

Perhaps making an agreement with Jimmy Haslam allowing them to trade current and future assets to land New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo?

Gilbert has a bright future with the young core the Browns have acquired. However, even if Garoppolo is not the target, hopefully Gilbert has a plan for the future at the quarterback position.

I’ll take it one step forward. With Gilbert in charge, what if he were to make even more major changes to Cleveland’s front office?

That is a bit extreme, but I would not take that option off the table just yet.

Left tackle Joe Thomas has been through so many changes during his hall of fame career in NE Ohio, and he has only good things to say about the team. One more change will not affect that. Knowing what Gilbert is doing with the Cavaliers should make Thomas and company very excited.

Another change is ongoing at the Browns’ headquarters. Whether the upcoming ownership change is a good thing will be determined sooner rather than later.

Plenty of questions will now come up. From Gilbert’s analytical preferences to his willingness to stay with the current Browns’ plan to improve remains to be seen. One thing though that is clear now is that this story is phony.
