Cleveland Browns: How about Cyrus Kouandjio as a buy-low option at RT?

There is a question mark still remaining along the Cleveland Browns’ offensive line and it needs filled.

The Cleveland Browns made significant moves along their offensive line this past offseason as they added guard Kevin Zeitler and center J.C. Tretter. Those acquisitions certainly bolstered the offense, but there is an unknown… at right tackle.

Yes, veteran lineman Cameron Erving is going to get a look there and second year lineman Shon Coleman also will see time there. Both players are currently Cleveland’s best options for the position.

However, as a (semi-strong) belief of building a team from the inside-out, the uncertainty at right tackle still bothers me. Why put up with average at best talent, when there are talented players who for one reason or another failed elsewhere.

If Erving can still get an opportunity on the Browns’ line, most players should. Although Coleman played minimally last season, he is definitely a work in progress and a long-term developmental player. I saw that as he played at Auburn and  that opinion has not changed.

One specifically is veteran tackle Cyrus Kouandjio. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Buffalo Bills released the lineman earlier today. As Rapoport pointed out, Kouandjio struggled physically and was injured while in Buffalo (sounds familiar doesn’t it)?

Kouandjio was a second round pick by Buffalo in 2014 and appeared in 12 games the last two seasons per pro-football-reference.com. I know some are favoring Erving and/or Coleman and I get that, but both in the big picture are backups in the NFL.

Now that Kouandjio is no longer in Buffalo, what are the chances he could land in Cleveland? I would not bet on it, but if I were in the front office, I would strongly consider a buy-low contract.

Maybe Coleman or Erving in the meantime can solidify the right tackle position. Until one of them ends up as the answer, the RT position will be a revolving door. Thus, the same type of thing with the quarterback position.

Kouandjio has potential to still achieve. If he can stay healthy, his career will turn for the better. Cleveland’s offensive line is going to do very good this fall. However, why not attempt to add more talent and turn their play from very good to great?

If one of Cleveland’s current lineman cannot fill the need at right tackle, it only makes sense to look for options elsewhere. If the Browns were to add Kouandjio, he could be another Erving.

That said, the opposite could occur and his play barring injury, could improve back to his projections when he was drafted. At least try Cleveland. It does not hurt to do that. Who knows, perhaps adding Kouandjio does indeed mean all five positions are set for 2017 and beyond.
