The Cleveland Browns will need a bargain deal to get Everson Griffen according to Mary Kay Cabot.

The Cleveland Browns are out of the Everson Griffen sweepstakes unless he comes in under his current expectations, this according to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. This is, of course, an opinion but one that can’t be dismissed. While she may not be everyone’s very favorite sports personality locally, she is well versed in the field of the Browns and has an understanding of how the team operates. So her opinion is pretty solid.

Truthfully, this isn’t that shocking of an opinion though. After the deal with Olivier Vernon where the team restructured his deal, it was clear that the Browns were going to roll with the veteran player despite rumors all offseason of the team thinking about releasing him.

So Vernon’s now the option to probably start at the left defensive end spot. This doesn’t mean that’s going to be the case when camp breaks in time for the season, but it is a sign that the team has exhausted their attempts at signing Griffen or fellow free agent Jadeveon Clowney.

While the team still has the money to offer either player a nice contract, the team is preparing to offer Myles Garrett a huge deal, while keeping money free for Baker Mayfield, and Nick Chubb. The team doesn’t want to get into a situation like the Los Angeles Rams were just in, where they gave all of their top player’s huge contracts, only to have to cut or trade someone to free up space.

The team may have to move on from an Odell Beckham Jr. type in the near future as well, in order to keep some cap space open in future seasons as well, but as of right now the team believes the can support their current roster and Garrett’s new deal. Unfortunately, that does mean the Browns probably won’t be adding another Pro Bowler this offseason.
