The New York Daily News won’t print the word “Redskins” in stories about Washington’s football team, and now the newspaper will treat Chief Wahoo the same way. The Daily News declared it won’t print the Chief’s images in its pages, or on its website any longer.

Daily News Baseball Insider blogger Andy Martino shared the news in a recent post, via Yahoo:

"“Today, we can also tell you that the paper will no longer use the Cleveland Indians’ logo, Chief Wahoo. Another obvious and positive development, and one that won’t prevent us from continuing to call on the team and others in media to do the same. In reporting on this issue in the recent past, it became clear to me that Native American groups consider Chief Wahoo offensive, which is enough for the rest of us to deem it inappropriate.”"

The Cleveland Plain Dealer, has called for the franchise to retire the Chief and it appears as if the organization is responding. Chief Wahoo is still prominent on hats and jersey sleeves, but the “Block C” has become the team’s primary logo.

• There was also kind of a big game last night and for a brief moment, anyway, the postseason appeared to be a real possiblity. Michael Brantley doubled home a speedy Michael Bourn to tie the Tigers, 4-4, in the bottom of the seventh. The run meant the Indians overcame a 4-0 first inning deficit against Detroit ace Max Scherzer. But then Armageddon happened. A seven-run, 11th-inning rung the Tribe’s bell, and it may have been the knockout punch to the Tribe’s hopes.

Trevor Bauer beat the Tigers twice this year, but he put the Indians behind before the bats ever had a chance by allowing four runs in the first inning. It took Bauer 38 pitches to get through the first and 64 to hold the Tigers scoreless over the next 4 2/3 innings.

• This was a hard series to swallow. The Indians, at the very least, needed a split. The fact that three of the four games were winnable makes it gut wrenching as the postseason clock continues to tick.

Cleveland Browns

Josh Gordon will sell cars during his suspension from the NFL, which is good, if you’re in the market for a cam0-colored Porsche.

Johnny Manziel has always been brilliant to recognize himself as a brand, and that showed with his latest move to trademark the name, “Johnny Cleveland.” His other trademarks include “Johnny Football,” “JFF,” “ManzIIiel” and “The House That Johnny Built.”

• Now Joe Haden may not be shadowing Antonio Brown all game. It’s more mind games between Mike Pettine and Mike Tomlin. Let’s just play already! 1 p.m. Sunday can’t get here soon enough!

Cleveland Cavaliers

Kyrie Irving took a spill yesterday that had to have Cleveland Cavaliers general manager LeBron James holding his breath. The fall came during the FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Irving quickly put everybody at ease:

WFNY’s Kirk had the best idea to get Kyrie back home safely.

Ohio State Buckeyes

• Is the Buckeye defensive line overrated? That’s what one NFL executive said, stating the unit has “no elite talent.”

It’s easy to pile on the front line, as it was gashed for 370 rushing yards against Navy, but it might be a little premature to be so dramatic. Noah Spence and Michael Bennett could be first round picks this spring. Adolphus Washington was a blue-chip recruit and sophomore Joey Bosa is on the rise.

Perhaps Buckeye nation and NFL scouts will know a little more about the defensive line after this weekend, when the Bucks play a more conventional offense.

• A photo of the Buckeye’s new tunnel at Ohio Stadium surfaced and it makes we want to strap on the Scarlet and Gray. It result in very large men handing me getting a butt-whooping, but I’d be darn motivated running out of that tunnel!

• Come 2022 and 2023, Ohio State fans will see Notre Dame added to the Buckeyes’ schedule, via Buckeye Sports Bulletin.
