2009 First Round: Siena 74, Ohio State 72 (2 OT)

Siena beat Ohio State in the Buckeyes’ first game of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. On paper, it wasn’t that big an upset, as Thad Matta’s crew entered March Madness as a No. 8 seed, and upstart Sienna was seeded ninth.

Regardless, Sienna doesn’t beat Ohio State at much of anything, let alone basketball.

But on that day in 2009, Sienna was better. It took Siena two overtimes to eliminate Ohio State, but that only makes it worse, knowing the Buckeyes couldn’t shut the door on a lesser opponent–and they had their chances.

Then sophomore Evan Turner had a dominant stat line in that game (25 points, eight assists, nine boards) but the future NBA lottery pick missed a game winning shot in regulation. Another sophomore, Jon Diebler had a chance to give the Buckeyes a win at the end of the first overtime, but missed.

And the cherry on top of a heartbreak sundae? The game was played at the University of Dayton. This was a home game for OSU–and they let it slip away.
