Cleveland Cavaliers: What is Kevin Love’s Future with the Team?
By Ryan Rosko
Kevin Love has many options for his future this summer.
Cleveland Cavaliers power forward Kevin Love has a big decision this summer as he determines whether to option out of his contract or be a free agent this summer. With Love being out, his team is now just three wins from a championship, the team’s first.
It would have been nice to see Love out on the court, but due to surgery from a previous injury in the playoffs, he will only be able to watch now and hope to be in next year’s finals. The rumors have already taken off on where he may land, but Love continues to preach that he will be in Cleveland next season.
Kevin Love is a west coast guy, who went to UCLA. If Love were to stay and want to sign a longterm extension with the team, the salary cap situation would be very interesting, especially two years from now. The FoS crew debates his uncertain future.

I’m not sure I would take that as a ringing endorsement from him! If he doesn’t for some reason, then there are other options, like LaMarcus Aldridge! The biggest problem facing the Cavs is they have other free agents they need to sign. They are Tristan Thompson, J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert to name a few.
Does Dan Guilbert have the money to sign all of them? They will all be looking for big money after this year. The Luxury Tax alone would be large. They have decisions to make.

I for one believe Kevin Love’s word that he’s coming back, at least for next season. The way I look at it, Love’s options are limited.
He could go back home to LA and join the Lakers, but next season is Kobe Bryant‘s farewell tour. Love’s game would be overshadowed by Kobe’s impending retirement. The Lakers have the #2 overall pick, but after Kobe retires it’ll be rebuild mode and I don’t think Love wants that again. He had that in Minnesota and it’s the reason he left.

Houston is an option, but do they have a better shot in the West with a team like Golden State? The Cavaliers are in the Finals now, and Houston isn’t. The road to playing in the NBA Finals again could potentially be easier in Cleveland than Houston.
Now after the 2015-2016 season, who knows what Love might do. With the impending huge tv deal coming in 2016, the landscape of the league could change.
Teams could go from duds to studs if the salary cap explodes and superstar players are out there to be had. If the rules stay the same though, the Cavaliers still have the ability to offer Love the largest Max deal. They also should still have LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, and what’s not to like about that?

There’s no reason to believe Kevin Love will leave at the end of the year. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has reported Love has expressed his interest to stay, both on and off the record. He’s seen LeBron lift the Cavs into the NBA Finals without his services. He has to believe Cleveland would be better off if he was available to play.
I think Love opts out, and re-signs with the Cavs this summer. The Cavs will offer the max, but I foresee Love signing a deal similar to the contract LeBron James signed last summer—basically a one-year contract with a player option for a second year. This gives Love the possibility of signing a deal similar to what LeBron James signed, which would free him up to cash in when the salary cap explodes next summer.
Since the Cavs will offer the max, it will be interesting to see how Love reacts considering the injuries he suffered this season. Maybe he’ll surprise everyone and take it. Improbably, but not out of the question.

Cleveland needs to make sure Kevin Love stays in town. The cost may be a max offer to get him, though with his skills and seeing first hand the success without him, the price could be lower.
If I am Love, before I would sign anything, I would sit down with David Blatt and management and make sure there is a plan in place so that he is not a stretch four.
I also believe he is going come back to Cleveland but would not be surprised if they went in another direction like Tristan Thompson. If that is the case, I would strongly disagree with that preference. Regardless, I would expect to see him in wine and gold for years to come.
