With Belliard gone, the Indians made an intriguing trade prior to the 2007 season that sent power hitting third-base prospect Kevin Kouzmanoff to San Diego for second baseman Josh Barfield.
Barfield had a great rookie season for the Padres in 2006, slashing .280/.318/.423. The son of former big-leaguer Jesse Barfield, indicated the kid had the pedigree and couldn’t miss.
But he did.
Barfield never got on track after the trade. He played in 130 games in 2007, but was out of the big leagues after 2009. Kouzmanoff didn’t turn into much either, but the Tribe’s swing-and-a-miss on Barfield was a surprise to many.
