Perhaps the biggest name linked to the Cleveland Indians at the 2015 MLB Trade Deadline was former Milwaukee Brewers OF Carlos Gomez. His stat line this year reads .265 with 9 homers and 47 RBI, but one might consider this season a down year. In 2013 and 2014 Gomez hit .284 with 20+ home runs, and 73 RBI’s. He’s a player that many people around baseball considered to be coming into his prime.
He fits every need the Indians currently have. The nine-year veteran plays a Gold Glove caliber Center Field, he has speed to steal bases, can hit for power, and he’s right-handed. Ric McElroy of our own Factory of Sadness wrote about why the Indians should have traded for Gomez almost two months ago. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports says the Indians had interest in Gomez, and potentially discussed the potential interest with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The only problem? Nothing happened between the Indians and the Brewers, and Gomez was eventually traded to the Houston Astros. He’s been a welcome addition to their lineup despite not having produced back to his 2014 production.
No matter how the Gomez deal goes for Houston, the one thing that will haunt the Indians is that they didn’t try. They did not try to add a player of Gomez’s potential to their lineup. He’s the player the Indians thought they were getting when they signed Bourn.
Would he have taken us to the World Series himself? No, probably not, but of all the trade targets he had the most potential to do so. He had the potential to add some pop, speed, and flair to the offense while solidifying the outfield defense.
Sorry Chris Antonetti, you had five potential swings at helping your offense knock teams out of the park but you struck out. It’s an all too common theme for the Cleveland Indians in recent memory.
As the window to contend with this “core” of Santana, Corey Kluber, Jason Kipnis, and company reaches its prime years, we can only hope that the front office led by Antonetti will eventually look to hit a home run. We as fans get tired of striking out at the trade deadline, and watching our dud of an offense struggle to support a pitching staff that’s one of the best in baseball. Oh well, as we fans say in Cleveland, “There’s always Next Year!”
