Connor Shaw/ Thaddeus Lewis

In the grand scheme of things, this battle might be the least intriguing. Shaw played decent in the first preseason game, but didn’t do anything spectacular. He showed slightly improved arm strength and continued to show a veteran-like poise in the pocket. However, an injury believed at first to be with his hand, but later announced was with his wrist has more than likely ended his 2015 season due to recent surgery.

As a result, Thaddeus Lewis may make the team by default as the third quarterback. He only played late into in the first preseason game against the Redskins going 2 for 4 with an INT. He’s an experienced veteran who found some success in Buffalo in 2013, but he’s basically an emergency backup.

As Browns fans, we all know how important the third QB is though. It’s rare that one, let alone two QBs make it through a given season for the Browns. Look for Lewis to possibly get some really late play in Saturday night’s third preseason game, but don’t expect much. He’s essentially going to make the team as a result of Shaw’s injury and his experience if needed.

In summary of the quarterback position, there are no real standouts through two preseason games for the Browns. That’s not a great thing, but it’s not a terrible situation either. McCown and Manziel have a lot to prove, but both QBs have shown flashes of great play. In order to win the starting job, McCown’s got to show more consistency in his throws, continue to move the offense, and put the ball in the end zone.

He’ll have the better part of three quarters to do so. If he plays poorly and Manziel steals the show again, look for the Manziel for starter movement to gain traction. He could start game four if he plays well enough, and that would be his best shot. There’s a lot to watch at the QB position come preseason game number three, but there’s another position almost just as important to the success of this offense.
