Cleveland Browns: What Is Johnny Manziel’s Future?

Future Could Go Different Ways

I honestly don’t know at this point. It depends on what drove coach Pettine and the organization to start McCown this week. Up until today I thought the plan for Manziel was simply playing McCown until Manziel started looking like he was ready to play in the NFL (which in my opinion he looked like he did this past Sunday).
Then Manziel was gonna take the reigns for the rest of the season unless he imploded on the field and looked like crap, in which case McCown would take back over and finish the season out. I then thought the organization was going to later review Manziel’s season.
The team would then go into the draft thinking about either taking a QB because they felt Manziel wasn’t the guy or taking offensive weapons to help Manziel out because they felt like he was the guy. However, I’m not so sure about that now.
Manziel didn’t play amazing on Sunday, but he played like an NFL QB and won the game. I thought that was enough to put Manziel in the driver’s seat, but I guess that it is not the case based on the decision made at the position.
My guess is that Manziel’s future will go one of two ways depending on what this week’s decision was based on. If McCown is starting because the Browns simply like McCown that much, then I’m sure Manziel will get another shot to do his thing later this season.
Unless he regresses from what he did against Tennessee he’ll be given time to develop into our guy at QB before we decide to go into another direction. or If McCown is starting because the Browns don’t like Manziel that much, then he’ll probably be gone by the start of next year and we’ll probably be looking for Connor Cook, Cardale Jones, Christian Hackenberg, etc. in the draft.
