Goff’s Younger

Jared Goff, 21, is almost two years younger than North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz, 23, and yet he’s more accomplished. Yes, Wentz won two national titles at the FCS level, but Goff’s college career is impressive.

He’s started at a Power-5 conference since he was a freshman and was a big reason why Cal has turned into a respectable program.  In 2015, he led the Pac-12 in passing yards 4,714, and he has the third-most yards 12,195 in conference history.

Yes, his 13 interceptions were the most in the Pac-12 last season, but so were his 43 touchdowns. If he’s going to throw for that many scores, I think we can all live with the picks. Additionally, his 96 career passing touchdowns ranks fourth in Pac-12 history (since 1956), ahead of big names, such as Andrew Luck, John Elway, and Carson Palmer.

For some perspective, Matt Barkley and Matt Leinart are No. 1 and No. 3 on the list, respectively, but none-the-less, Goff’s touchdown numbers are still impressive.

This isn’t to take away from Wentz, who threw 25 touchdowns against 10 interceptions as a junior in 2014. As a senior, Wentz was injured and missed six games, but still threw for 17 touchdowns and four interceptions. Twice, Wentz was named the Most Outstanding Player in the Division I Championship Game.

But his numbers need to be good. Actually, that’s wrong. They need to be extraordinary, because we’re talking about a kid from North Dakota State as the No. 2 overall pick in the Draft. Yes, he has the physical gifts, such as size, but it’d be like a Mount Union quarterback going No. 2…Out of this world crazy stuff.

Wentz is impressive, but not at No. 2. If the Browns are going to draft a quarterback, I’d take the more accomplished, younger prospect and pair him up with quarterback whisperer, Hue Jackson.
