Cleveland Indians: First Game Of The Season Was Postponed
By Ryan Rosko
Fans will have to wait to see the start of the 2016 Cleveland Indians regular season.
Opening day for the Cleveland Indians did not start today as originally scheduled. The Tribe’s first game of the year versus the Boston Red Sox was postponed for tomorrow afternoon.
Gates are set to open at Progressive Field at 11 AM with a start time of 1:10 PM. The fans who attended today’s game has options in case they cannot go to the make-up game tomorrow. Cleveland released a statement regarding the postponement.
Today’s starting pitching matchup will have to wait another day for their debut start in 2016. Boston had left-handed pitcher David Price, a free agent signee this past offseason going up against Cleveland’s ace Corey Kluber.
Prior to today’s game, the Cleveland Indians used their Twitter account to display the weather at the ballpark. The team also broke down and compared recent temperatures during holidays, events, and today’s game.
I can understand why the Cleveland Indians postponed the game. What was not done effectively, however, was the timing to the team’s announcement that there would be no baseball today.

Yes, the weather varied throughout recent days so the Cleveland Indians knew that the weather conditions were not going to be great. Yesterday there was snow in Cleveland, but today’s forecast has mainly been rain related. How soon the team decided to postpone the game is unknown, but they should have let fans know regardless much sooner.
Many people who had tickets either had to travel quite a distance, took a day off of work, or possibly both. Not to mention the money they had to spend. Those fans are not going to get that time back and that is very unfortunate.
It is not like this type of weather is new to the city of Cleveland or the state of Ohio. Residents are used to it. Teams in other cities have played in similar or worse conditions before.
Safety is very important and should be a very high priority, but putting in the effort to at least try to start the game and seeing where it goes from there could have been a better game plan (assuming a postponement announcement was not announced much sooner). If a rain delay had to occur first, then fine, but at least try to start the game the game on time.
The Cleveland Indians game was set to start at 4:10 PM. The toughest parts for the two teams would have been battling the wind and making sure they have multiple layers on them because of the temperature.

At the end of the day, it is what it is and this is just the start to a very long season. On the other hand, it is not like the weather will be that much different tomorrow. The future weather makes the postponement that much more frustrating.
