Cleveland Indians: When Should Giovanny Urshela Play?
By Ryan Rosko
Multiple Scenarios Could Lead Urshela Back To The Majors
Kris Grimes
If the Cleveland Indians are to bring up Giovanny Urshela, they need to be 100% confident he is ready to hit. That said, I am surprised every day that Francisco Lindor is hitting at the rate he is. His track record in the minors was up and down at best. However, he has feasted on Major League pitching. So who knows, Urshela could find the same success.
That said, there are only three reasons the Indians should bring up Urshela before September. The first reason would be if Urshela starts hitting the cover off the ball at AAA. Like Nick said, his current .094 average is not going to do it.
It is still early though, and there is definitely a chance that his bat could wake up. The career .267 hitter in the minors will have a lot to work on, but like I mentioned before, Lindor was not exactly the best hitter in the minors either.

If called up, Urshela could find he enjoys Major League pitching better and improve on his .225 average. He did have 6 home runs last season which shows he does have some power, and the Cleveland Indians can always use power.
The second reason the Indians would need to look at bringing Urshela up is when they are completely done with Juan Uribe. Whether his errors on defense become too much to overcome, or his bat does not wake up, that is one of the few times I see it worth bringing Urshela up before he is completely ready.
However, Uribe’s bat is starting to wake up with multiple hits over the last two games. If he continues to get better as April moves along, there will be no reason to promote Urshela unless he presses the issue with success at AAA.

The last and final reason the Cleveland Indians could promote Urshela is if they find themselves out of the playoff race early. This is a worse case scenario by far, and hard to tell in April, but the scenario exists.
If for some reason the Indians find themselves slipping in the standings, and struggling on offense, it might be worth getting Urshela more experience at the Major League level. Let us hope that this season does not go that way though. If it does, Indians fans will not be as excited about his call-up unless he can re-energize the offense like Lindor did at the end of last season.
