Cavs Draft: Limited Resources To Acquire A Draft Pick
By Ryan Rosko
The Cavs roster is pretty much set already for next season, but could a trade occur tonight during the NBA Draft add to their talented roster?
Hard work, determination, and the willingness to spend the necessary money allowed the Cleveland Cavaliers to win their first championship Sunday night. However, to acquire some of the needed pieces of the championship team, the Cavs had to surrender multiple first round picks (including two for Timofey Mozgov and one for Channing Frye).
Now, just hours before the NBA Draft begins, the Cavs will go into the draft without not only zero first round picks, but also zero second rounders too. There are holes on this roster that needs to be fixed, but they may not be filled the way fans would like them to be improved upon.
Despite no current picks in tonight’s draft, that is not to say Cleveland cannot/will not be able to acquire a veteran player and/or pick. Thanks to their multiple trade exceptions, the Cavs could get into position to acquire exactly that.

The Cavs have five trade exceptions. Of the five, only one has been partly been used and that was center Brendan Haywood‘s. The other four trade exceptions are of the following former Cavaliers players: guard/forward Mike Miller, guard Joe Harris, center Anderson Varejao, and guard Jared Cunningham.
Earlier today fellow FoS Editor Nick Dudukovich wrote that “Player development will be huge for the Cavaliers moving forward”. That is true and unfortunately with no guarantee of making an impact tonight, Cleveland may have to be even more creative because of their financial makeup.

The Cavs’ trade rumors will not go away and with so many TPEs, why would they? Given how Cleveland is constructed, the only way the Cavs become part of tonight’s draft is by trading away at least one of those trade exceptions.
Kevin Love is not going to be dealt today and although Iman Shumpert has been mentioned as a possibility, his defense is too good to give away. So what is the likelihood of a trade exception being used?

Unless Cleveland can acquire a solid veteran role player and a late teens to a pick in the mid 20’s, a trade is slim. However, if a center/power forward prospect starts to drop who they can develop or someone with the athleticism to guard both wings and players on the block , then I would not be surprised to see the Cavs make some sort of deal.
