Trading For A Top Pick Is No Guarantee It Will Lead To Success

Torrelle Howard

I am against trading Josh Gordon unless the Cleveland Browns get an absolutely ridiculous offer in return (aka Cam Newton/Antonio Brown/Luke Kuechly). I know we’re just brainstorming what we would want back here. Realistically, other teams aren’t going to give up a lot seeing that Gordon has had such a checkered past.

The Browns have put up with his checkered past through all of the bad times in hopes that he will overcome his issues. Their hope is that he gets back on the field and be the Pro-Bowl level WR we saw only a few years ago.

Now that the end is finally in sight, I would not want to give up on that opportunity for another player that was not already a stud himself. I’d take the risk that Gordon makes another mistake and misses more playing time  if that means that Gordon is added to the team.

That being said I would consider trading him for the following:

A first round pick. A first round pick is the absolute bare minimum I’d need to trade Gordon away. Losing a potential play-maker for another potential play-maker in return is how I’d look at it.

Acquiring such a pick still wouldn’t quite do it for me seeing how there’s no guarantee that a first round pick will produce for you. Still, I could live with those chances at scoring another play-maker that could stay out of trouble off of the field.

Assuming the player(s) Cleveland gets are Top 15 in the league at their respective position:
A Tackle or Center. The Browns have holes on the offensive line with Alex Mack and Mitchell Schwartz leaving.

Although it’s only preseason, it does not look like the Browns have anyone to step up and fill those holes so far. Robert Griffin has looked good so far, but that is one way to quickly ruin any hope of him being the franchise QB is if he gets hurt. Acquiring a good tackle/center to protect him for Gordon wouldn’t be too bad of a trade-off.

A safety or cornerback: Cleveland’s DBs have looked real bad so far and I don’t expect it to get a whole lot better. Haden will be back in the fray soon, but even at his best can only stop one WR.

Getting another good CB to play opposite him, or a Tashaun Gipson like safety to ball-hawk and steal some passes away from opposing QBs would be a huge step in fortifying what is now a young and fragile defense.
