Cleveland Browns: 4 Find Themselves In Dawg House
4. Ibraheim Campbell
Ibraheim Campbell has played OK in the first few games of the season. Except for Sunday.
I will give him a break since he’s missed the last two games with a strained hamstring. But missed tackles, and blown coverages are unacceptable. As a whole, this team needs to go back to tackling fundamentals. There are more missed and half-hearted tackles made by the Browns than I have ever seen.
Some of the blame goes to Ray Horton, but his job is to call the plays, not teach men that have played this game most of their life how to correctly tackle.
Campbell had one of his worst games since being with the Browns. He got beat deep by Chris Hogan numerous times, which allowed Brady to pick the secondary apart. He was also confused on a touchdown to Martellus Bennett.
The defense was set for the run, but instead of him adjusting on the fly, Bennett ran past him for the easy score.
That’s what separates great NFL safety’s from mediocre ones. It wasn’t the only time he got beat, either. He didn’t give anybody help when they were over the top or under. It was either Man or Press, and if Haden or somebody got beat, there was nothing that could be done.
I couldn’t tell if it was Tony Gonzalez or Kellen Winslow Sr. out there.
It was all-in-all a bad performance by Campbell. Next week, he’s going to have to deal with Delanie Walker, Kendall Wright and veteran Andre Johnson of the Tennessee Titans. They don’t have Brady throwing to them, but any receiver or tight end can make a safety look silly if they continually make mistakes.
The Browns were overmatched from the start, but playing intimidated is an issue. There are going to be lots of teams that are more established than this one, but if play like Campbell’s continues, it’s going to be an even longer season.
