2016 World Series: 5 Longest World Series Droughts
4. Houston Astros, 53 Seasons
Another year, another season without a title for Houston.
But remember when the team’s Class AAA affiliate was ready to pass out 2017 championship rings to paying customers before the start of the 2015 season? Someone realized it was a bad idea.
While there isn’t a real ring for fans to visit in Cooperstown, it’s not like the Astros haven’t had an opportunity to be baseball’s best. The club’s made 10 trips to the postseason since their birth as the Colt .45s in 1962, most recently appearing in 2015 behind Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel.
The Astros even made the bold move to acquire Randy Johnson in 1998, as The Big Unit went 10-1 and posted a sick 1.28 ERA down the stretch. The trade didn’t help come postseason time, as Houston was bounced by the eventual NL Champion San Diego Padres in the Division Series.
The Astros would have to wait until 2005 to make its only World Series appearance, and while Houston couldn’t celebrate, the team helped end another long drought by losing to the Chicago White Sox. It was the Sox’s first title since 1917.
