In a three-way tie for futility, only one of these teams had a real shot to end their drought in 2016, and that’s was Washington…until the Dodgers eliminated Bryce Harper and company at home in Game 5 of the NLDS.
It may not be entirely fair to blame Washington for its drought, because the franchise played as the Montreal Expos from 1969-2004. Still, it’s the same organization, and it’s the organization that ultimately wins titles. Montreal did have the best record in the bigs during the 1994 season, but the player’s strike prohibited fans from seeing if the Expos could finish the season as champs.
The Padres got close in the late 1990s, but reached the 1998 World Series at the same time the Yankees were dominating the postseason. The franchise’s only other Fall Classic appearance came in 1984, when the club lost to Tigers in five games.

The Brewers have been to the World Series just once since the club moved to the midwest from Seattle in 1970. In the 1982 Series, the Brewers had a 3-2 edge over the Cardinals, but couldn’t seal the deal.
