MLB Free Agents will start cashing in soon, and that probably includes reigning stolen base king Rajai Davis. Here’s five landing spots for the outfielder.
Rajai Davis is a free agent, and while the Indians would like to have him back at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario, there should be other suitors for his services.
Davis’ 43 stolen bases led the American League. It’s amazing to consider that he was 35 for the entire regular season. Opposing catchers picked him just six times! Even when other teams knew he was going to steal, they couldn’t stop the speedy veteran.
Davis batted .249 (.693 OPS) with 12 HR and 48 RBI in 2016. He can play all three outfield positions, which will be attractive to teams looking for versatility.
While Davis’ Game 7 heroics are still fresh in Cleveland Indians’ fans minds, it also shouldn’t be forgotten that Davis struggled late in the season, batting .175 (.434 OPS) after Sept. 1.
The Indians could make Davis the qualifying offer of $17.2 million for next season. The qualifying offer is an average of the the top 50 salaries in MLB.
It’s unlikely the Indians would make Davis the offer, because it’s not within their payroll to dedicate $17 million to a 36-year-old veteran. If Davis were to reject such an offer, the Tribe would receive draft pick compensation should Rajai sign elsewhere.
In the world of MLB free agents, here are some potential landing spots for Davis.
