MLB Free Agents: 5 Potential Landing Spots For Rajai Davis
Cleveland Indians
Rajai Davis was a World Series for two innings. He hit that 8th inning homer off Aroldis Chapman to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth during Game 7 of the World Series.
Davis signed with the Indians for $5.25 million before the start of the 2017 season. The Indians were desperate for help in the outfield. Michael Brantley was nagged by shoulder problems. Abraham Almonte was suspended for the first 50 games after a PED bust. The Tribe’s outfield situation got worse when Marlon Byrd got popped for PEDs.
In their absence, manager Terry Francona rotated a group of players that eventually led to the Tribe winning the AL pennant.
Davis can play all the outfield positions, but he was mostly used in left and in center with the Tribe.
The Indians say they want Davis back, but are they going to be wiling to pay him more than the $5.25 million he made in 2016?
Entering the 2017 season, the Tribe believes Michael Brantley will be ready to start the season fresh in Spring Training. In left, the Tribe has an effective platoon with Lonnie Chisenhall and Brandon Guyer. Guyer crushes lefties. After being acquired on Aug. 1, he hit .333 with 2 HR and 14 RBI in 81 at bats.
Some questions do remain about center. The Tribe has Tyler Naquin, who had a great rookie season, although he did fall off a bit toward the end of the regular season. Playing against mostly right-handers, Naquin hit .296 (.886 OPS) with 14 HR and 43 RBI.
And then there’s the Almonte factor. The Indians expect to have him back. Almonte, 27 has hit .264 (.735 OPS) with 6 HR and 42 RBI in 118 games over the 2015-16 seasons, and was 14-of-14 in stolen bases.
