Tracy Howard

It has not been a good few weeks for Tracy Howard.

If fans were hoping to forget about the over-pursuit and missed tackles of Jordan Poyer, they’re disappointed. Howard has been just as awful as Poyer.

He gets beat down the field, misses easy tackles, and is consistently out of position. He just doesn’t look comfortable playing safety.

He has originally played cornerback, but was forced into the safety position due to lack of depth. Just like the rest of the defense, Howard had no answer for the Cowboys attack.

He whiffed on numerous open tackles on Ezekiel Elliott. He also got mixed up on an easy touchdown to Cole Beasley–and I can’t forget the missed tackles on other players. It’s not just this week with Howard, it’s been every game.

His play has been so bad, Ed Reynolds got significant playing time at the position Sunday. He wasn’t any better.

It’s obvious the team needs improvement at every position, but I think safety should be the main focus on the defensive side of the ball. Losing Tashaun Gipson has caused an obvious void.

He wasn’t Ed Reed or Ronnie Lott, but his production would destroy anything Howard and Reynolds could ever do at this point.

So what is the solution?  There is none. The Browns are stuck with the platoon at safety until they either draft or sign one in free agency.

The worst receiver on an opposing team could have a career day against these guys. I don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel this season for that spot. All that can be done is hope and prayer.
