Cleveland Browns: A Draft Plan Involving Jimmy Garoppolo
By Ryan Rosko
The Cleveland Browns are still searching for their franchise quarterback. However, the wait could end this offseason, assuming talent is also added at other key spots.
Acquiring a franchise quarterback is hard enough. For the Cleveland Browns, the organization has gone in many directions to get that guy. Nothing has fell into place for them, but that can change via a trade with the New England Patriots.
The two teams recently made two separate deals with linebacker Barkevious Mingo heading to New England and fellow linebacker Jamie Collins making his way to NE Ohio. Now, the temptation to acquire Patriots promising young quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has become even more of a possibility.
That is great and all, but Cleveland is still in the beginning stages of a rebuild. Due to where the Browns are, the case could be made for them to wait on a deal while they continue to add talent. That said, why not do both at the same time.
Lets say the price Cleveland would have to give up is a second round pick for Garoppolo. Such a price is more than fair, while Cleveland can add impact players early and often.
The Browns’ first first round pick, likely first overall, right now should go to Texas A&M Myles Garrett. Since Cleveland’s offensive line needs multiple upgrades, going that direction with their second first round pick would make sense.
That pick is in the top 10 at the moment and should stay there when the draft order is finalized. So, who would be the best option there?
Wisconsin’s offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk fits the Browns need for an upgrade along the offensive line and gets good value with him. Alabama offensive tackle Cam Robinson also makes sense.
Adding one of those tackles would go a long way in putting Garoppolo in the best position possible to be the franchise quarterback. Combining one of those tackles with Joe Thomas gives the Browns two book end tackles, and along with left guard Joel Bitonio has the potential of being a good offensive line.
Center and right guard are different stories. Cleveland needs one of their rookies or a veteran can play better in those spots for the time being.

Slowly, but surely Cleveland is getting talent on offense. However, in addition to quarterback, it also starts with the offensive line. Without those guys, no offense can succeed.
Should a trade for Garoppolo be more than just a second rounder, it will be very tough for the Browns to acquire the appropriate talent early on both sides of the ball. If indeed the price is more than that hypothetical price, a trade may never even happen.
That said, New England also has Jacoby Brissett as a backup to Tom Brady. Speaking of Brady, he wants to play into his 40’s and his play is not letting up.
Although Brissett is not Garoppolo yet, that doesn’t mean he can’t eventually be. So, if the Pats really want to make a move, dealing Garoppolo to Cleveland is a logical fit.
There are a number of younger players who has potential on Cleveland’s offense. The key for those players to showcase what they can do however rests on how efficient the quarterback and offensive line performs.

As long as Cleveland fills the OL needs early, the rest of the draft can be best player available. If given the chance to acquire a signal caller like Garoppolo, as well as upgrades along the line, next season’s team could be in line to make some noise much sooner than expected.
