The Cleveland Cavaliers have a great owner in Dan Gilbert, but is that soon to change?

A changing of the Cleveland Cavaliers‘ ownership one day will happen. Whether that occurs or not soon will be determined by a number of factors.

Cleveland’s former majority owner Gordon Gund was a very good owner during his tenure in NE Ohio. His successor, Dan Gilbert has been even better. He wants to win and his willingness to go over the luxury tax yearly is evident and appreciated.

As a businessman Gilbert is making the moves he believes best suits his beliefs both with the Cavaliers and elsewhere. Now, we may not always agree with what he decides to do, but he has been very successful.

Looking to the future however, can fans expect to see the same from Gilbert? In an ideal world, yes, but that is no guarantee. That is because life does not work that way, plus Gilbert is not from the area. Instead, he is a native of Detroit, Michigan.

Bleacher Report’s Ric Bucher reported that Gilbert may be looking for a new challenge closer to home.

Bucher made a number of good points. Not only is Gilbert investing in the area, but his Quicken Loans company is already based there. In addition, due to Detroit’s possibility of being on the market very soon, it would make sense if Gilbert had interest in possibly owning his hometown Pistons.

Should Gilbert want to go back to Michigan and own the Pistons, he would have to sell his majority share of the Cavaliers first. Although not anywhere to the same percentage, this was the route Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam had to do with his Pittsburgh Steelers stake prior to making the jump to becoming a majority owner in NE Ohio.

Given the commitment via upgrades to the Quicken Loans arena, I highly doubt Gilbert plans on leaving in the foreseeable future. On the other hand, making improvements could attract new ownership groups. Forward LeBron James already came back home, something some fans did not expect to happen. Some time down the line Gilbert could be in the same situation.

As enticing as it may be for Gilbert to consider the what ifs, he is best suited to stay in Cleveland. Not only will Gilbert be owning the Cavs with an upgraded arena, but he also has forward Kevin Love and point guard Kyrie Irving, two other top players in the NBA. It wasn’t long ago that Cleveland was a spot players didn’t want to be in.

Now, Cavaliers players have plans on staying in the area long-term. Had Gilbert not been the owner when Cleveland won the championship last year, such reactions and beliefs would not have been expressed.

Owning a team is a very serious and critical business decision. Blame should not be put on Gilbert if the opportunity came up, but there’s no need to worry about the hypotheticals.

Gilbert has seen Cleveland succeed and will continue to do all he can to help maintain that for a very long time. I am confident he is not going to leave Cleveland for Detroit. However, we will have to see if anything else develops in the meantime.
