Adam Shaheen, TE, Ashland, 6th-7th Round

Adam Shaheen figured to be a star at the NFL combine because of his physical attributes and he didn’t disappointment. Shaheen put up 24 reps on the bench press, tying for first among the tight end class. Alabama’s O.J. Howard, who’s projected to be the first tight end taken in the draft, did 22 reps.

Shaheen used the combine to confirm what many of us already though about him. That at 6-foot-7, 277 pounds, the Ashland product could be mismatch nightmare for opposing offensive coordinators to figure out.

Digest that for a moment, and then get ready for reality.

This prospect will make the jump from Division II ball to the NFL. Plus, he’s leaving school EARLY. The potential is obviously there, but it’d be crazy to think Shaheen can walk on the field and be a Day 1 starter.

He’s going to have to learn to go up against bigger, faster and stronger competition. This means he’s got to improve his hands so he can get off press-man coverage at the line of scrimmage.

Shaheen does boast above average speed and was an accomplished high school basketball player, so he does have the pedigree that NFL scouts are looking for in finding the next Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates or Jimmy Graham.

OK Browns fans, you might be wondering why Cleveland needs another tight end. The team has Gary Barnidge under contract and a pass catching, athletic prospect in Seth DeValve.

But with that said, you don’t turn your back on players with as much upside as Shaheen, especially when you’re loaded up on picks like the Browns are.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper predicted Shaheen go early on the third day of the draft, which means he’d be a fourth- or fifth-round selection.
