Tony Jefferson, Safety, Arizona

Tony Jefferson is probably a reach to be tied to the Browns, but Arizona certain seems to have produced some good safeties lately and Cleveland should pay attention.

Jefferson was excellent in 2016 and ranks as the fourth highest rated corner (per Pro Football Focus) going into free agency.

Jefferson, who is 25 and went undrafted four years ago, is going to be a hot commodity come March. He’ll enter free agency as the youngest defensive back available. In 2016, he outperformed his one-year, $1.67 million tender and finished sixth among NFL defensive backs with 92 tackles, third with two sacks, fifth with two forced fumbles and second with two fumble recoveries.

Safety may not be a high priority for the Browns in free agency. The front office will almost certainly address the position in the draft, and the franchise just picked up former Buckeye Tyvis Powell, who spent 2016 with the Seattle Seahawks.

Powell, who went undrafted in 2016, was coveted by other teams after being waived by the Seahawks. The Browns got him because they were first in the waiver line.

Cleveland also has Ibraheim Campbell and Derek Kindred. The Browns really liked Kindred, who was a fourth-round pick in 2016. He broke his ankle in March.

Jefferson may not be on the Browns radar, but he should be. He’s young, hungry and fits into the team’s youth movement.
