The NFL free agency period is a time where teams can instantly fill needs. For the Cleveland Browns, one of their key needs could be filled soon.

As we wait for the news regarding what the Cleveland Browns do with wide receiver Terrelle Pryor via the NFL free agency , they could end up helping their secondary.

The secondary as a whole could use upgrades, but there are other areas of importance. Even though there are areas of need all over the board, agreeing with someone who has experience is a must as soon as possible!

In terms of the safety position, Cleveland go a number of routes, but with so much money available they can overspend to get the necessary talent. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport, Cleveland could sign safety Tony Jefferson.

That is great news for Cleveland. The potential downfall of the negotiations with Jefferson is that Garafolo included the tidbit off the Baltimore Ravens being in the mixed too. Jefferson is a talented player and with Baltimore in the picture, will the Ravens put themselves in a bidding war?

Yes, signing Jefferson would fill a need and even though he has yet to agree to a deal, anything could still happen. Remember, even if free agents agree to a deal today, they can back out of it and agree with another organization before officially signing tomorrow.

With over $100 million, it makes perfect sense why Cleveland is offering the most money. Without that incentive, Jefferson likely would not be even considering the Browns.

Another free agent safety Cleveland could potentially sign is former Jacksonville Jaguar Jonathan Cyprien. The former Jag could be considered as a strong option if Cleveland is unable to sign Jefferson.

Both players would not end up in Cleveland because they play free safety. Neither can play both free and strong safety. Depending on how free agency goes, a safety regardless of the position, may not be considered as a priority in the draft.

As a result, a potential outcome could mean that Washington safety Budda Baker, UCONN’s Obi Melifonwu, etc., does not get drafted by the Browns.

Today overall has not been a good day for Cleveland’s front office. Multiple players could have helped them but none of them have agreed to a deal with Cleveland.

The Browns are behind at the moment, but with the cap room they have, that (hopefully) will change soon. Regarding Jefferson, the question is whether he is truly wanting to come to Cleveland or is he just using them for a nice payday elsewhere?
