The 2017 NFL Draft saw the Cleveland Browns pass on Mitchell Trubisky with the No. 1 pick. Could this be a move the front office regrets?

The Cleveland Browns did the smart thing, by drafting Myles Garrett. Pundits were lining up to fire upon the Factory of Sadness for passing up the best physical talent in the draft and instead, choosing Mitchell Trubisky.

The current group running the Browns is supposed to be the unconventional front office, yet they succumbed to the status quo. Thinking outside the box? That would’ve been choosing Mitch Trubisky. After all, the Harvard educated group is still chasing that one analytic they can’t crunch: quarterback.

The addition of Brock Osweiler put their mettle on display. It was an NBA move that turned the NFL on its head. They picked up Osweiler’s $16 million guaranteed salary because they wanted that second-round draft pick the Texas were all too eager to give up.

Trubisky would’ve been another NBA-style move that would’ve made waves throughout the league.

Think about the NBA draft lottery. The Cavs were certainly in it enough during the LeBron-less days. Unless you’re getting a guy with superstar potential, you’re pick is likely to have you back in the lottery next year.

In the NFL, no position is as important as the quarterback. The selection of Trubisky would’ve been based entirely on upside. Do you do that with the first-pick in the NFL? If if you think he has the potential to win Vince Lombardi trophies, then yes.

But the Browns did the right thing. That’s what you’ll be told now, tomorrow and in Week 1.

Trubisky’s career will be watched closely in Cleveland, much like Browns fans constantly monitor Carson Wentz on Sundays. Now we’ll be checking our Twitter feeds to see how the Mentor product’s touchdown/interception ratio stacks up to Garrett’s QB pressure, hit and sack numbers.

Maybe Garrett turns out to be a Hall of Famer. Maybe he doesn’t. A gold jacket at a position other than quarterback doesn’t mean anything. Ask Joe Thomas.

Looking back, it’s unclear how serious the Browns were about Trubisky. Perhaps Sashi Brown and Paul DePodesta were looking to attain the haul the 49ers received to trade down one slot.

This front office will be forever tied to Trubisky, even though they passed. That’s just the way it works.

The Browns have now passed on two quarterbacks. Make it three if you favored Patrick Mahomes, who went 10th to the Chiefs, or Deshuan Watson who went 12th to Texans after the Browns traded down. Everyone thought this regime’s jobs would be on the line when they finally took a quarterback.

Now, they’ve passed on Wentz. They’ve passed on Trubisky…and Mahomes…and Trubisky. For the “New Browns Order,” the clock is ticking.
