Cleveland Browns: Slow, Step By Step Approach Is A Must With DeShone Kizer
By Ryan Rosko
For the highest level of success, the Cleveland Browns cannot afford to rush their newest quarterback.
As the draft process played out, it was just a matter of time before the Cleveland Browns added a quarterback. Surprised or not, it did not occur as the franchise waited till the 52nd pick to select Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer.
Unlike past drafted quarterbacks with previous regimes, Kizer cannot be thrown into games as a rookie. Second-year signal caller Cody Kessler was, but that was mainly due to injuries. As a result, Kessler will get a legitimate chance of starting in 2017 with more resources to work with.
There is a lot to like about Kizer, as all the tools are at his disposal. From his size that is compared to Pittsburgh Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger (among others), to his ability to extend plays, as well as having a strong arm, the potential is there.

Then again, it is just a matter of the former Irish product and head coach Hue Jackson to bring it all together. Sure, Kizer also has some flaws (specifically with certain mechanic traits and accuracy), but Jackson can fix that.
Even if you are not onboard with Kizer, one cannot ignore the reality that this year’s draft class produced zero quarterbacks who are already ready to start from day one. Each of them have things that must be addressed before stepping out on the field during meaningful games.
Cleveland is not going to win many games in 2017. They also won’t be the AFC North in 2018 winner, but by then their roster as a whole will have gained more experience, and will be in a constant motion of steady progress.
To make the Kizer pick work, patience is not just an option. It is a must. Without it, temptation to play Kizer a lot earlier will do him no good. Yes, the NFL is a win now, play now league, but look at how the Browns have been building their roster.
Slow, but steady is working and in no time, Cleveland will be good. There is no point in playing a rookie quarterback right now.
So, is Kizer the guy for the future? That is the expectation with the Browns drafting him and hopefully he becomes the long-term answer. That said, it all depends on how long Cleveland waits for the talented rookie.

Should Cleveland play him at all in 2017, then the chances are not going to be as great. If they are able to sit Kizer for the season, such a plan would be ideal. Let Kizer work out his flaws and learn the NFL game this fall. In 2018, give him the reigns.
